The government is contemplating nationalizing banks. Is this good or bad for the economy? For the taxpayer? The homeowner?

I don’t think the government should, unless the US wants to become a socialist state. Right now it is half-way between socialist and capitalist…which is far worse than either one. It encourages speculation because it provides a socialist safety net when big gambles don’t pay out.

I agree with Malgosia. The bailouts were a socialist move, and while I support some of the points of socialism, I’m not sure this particular move was the smartest (especially with the latest bonus scandal). But in terms of banks, nationalizing isn’t the way to go, it’s totally redundant. The government should enforce better regulations and worry about the national bank first.
